Wind Energy in New York
Vertical Axis Wind Turbines- (VAWT)
Introducing a wind turbine for upstate New York! Renewable Rochester is proud to offer this unique, quiet, and sustainable energy system for home, commercial, and industrial deployment!
Let the power of the wind be your energy savings!
The first of it’s kind with style, class and the power to renew your home!!!
Pictured above is a 4Kw UGE wind system designed for a home. This wind system is designed for both commercial use and residential applications. They can be grid tied to your utility and help offset, and in some cases eliminate electric usage all together!
Wind Energy in New York
The UGE can be used in a variety of applications from off-grid, to grid tie, in remote locations, to along streets to power lighting. The advantage is that this VAWT can generate power in only a slight wind and with the wind blowing in any direction.
FACTS AND INFORMATION ABOUT THE VAWT
Costs: Between 20K and 30K depending on the system you purchase, but don’t forget your tax credits of 30% for federal and 25% for state!
Noise: Very limited and in the range of 60db or less, and along the range of normal conversation
Installation Time: Two weeks depending on the specific location, distance from the turbine to utility, complexity of the electric tie in and other factors.
Incentives: No Incentives for this specific wind unit as this is not an approved wind turbine unit so no incentives are available.
Reliability: This is one of the most reliable wind turbines on the market today.
How much power will these VAWT turbines produce? : This greatly depends on your specific area. If you live on a lake, on a hill or mountain you should be a great candidate. Notice we said should? If you have lots of trees this might effect your production. Please note that we want reliable systems, and systems that produce energy for our customers. We will not install a unit that will not perform. Typically this unit will generate approximately 4,000 – 5,000 Kwh’s annually of electric. In some cases this might be more, and of course for site with lots of trees and disrupted air flow you can expect less generation.
Warranty: Two years
Foundation: 5′ diameter and 8′ depth in most cases.
If you are serious about installing one of these systems then please call us at (585) 671-1301 and we will be glad to consult with you on the UGE VAWT wind turbine. The staff at Renewable Rochester can install and service your wind turbine.
An authors opinion of wind energy systems:
I have been in the renewable energy industry for over ten years and have seen many designs of wind systems. I have seen turbines that were installed back in the 1980′s, and they failed due to braking issues or speed control problems. I have seen older turbines from the 1980′s that were repaired many years later and they worked until the 50mph winds came and then they failed. If you have an old wind turbine from the early days don’t fix it, just replace it with a new wind energy system or solar photovoltaic system. These new systems are much better then the older systems and will last much longer. I have one friend who has put up his third wind turbine and spent thousands of dollars and major amounts of his time to repair or replace parts.
I have also seen new wind energy systems that claim to have the best turbine in the industry, and promise customers a world of energy savings, however this was short lived.
Wind Turbines can be a great energy producer if designed properly, and put in a viable wind area. Because an area seems like it is windy all the time, does not make it a viable area. Studies need to be done on your specific site to determine if placement of a turbine can work for you.
Another common error that happens with wind energy systems is that they are not put in the air high enough. Wind turbines need to have unobstructed air flow. This means that if you have lots of trees, buildings, valleys or hills, or any other obstacles, this is most likely a bad area for wind turbine placement and your wind turbine will not produce as much power as the manufacture says they will.
There is a huge difference between the megawatt large scale turbine and the smaller wind systems for homes beside height. The larger scale turbines are much taller to escape the wind obstructions discussed previously. There is also much more engineering that has gone into the larger turbines so there is less failure then smaller wind systems.
Remember that wind turbines are moving parts.. Moving parts wear out and they require yearly maintenance .
There are great incentives for wind turbines, however some turbines like the UGE or other vertical wind systems can not get these incentives since they have not been approved for use in New York State. While you can still install them, you just would not be able to get incentives from the State.
My thanks for reading our section on wind turbines in New York State.
